(Cole Harbour) The Parrsboro PeeWee Predators competed last
weekend in what could only be described as a true crowd pleaser
at the 25th Anniversary edition of the Joe LaMontagne Memorial
Hockey Tournament in Cole Harbour. Entering the tournament with nine
skaters and one goalie, the Parrsboro PeeWee's understood that they
certainly were underdogs but it did not take long for the team to
show their opponents that they came to Cole Harbour for the win.
In preliminary action on Friday,
Parrsboro faced the Sackville Hammerheads. After a hard 'back and
forth' battle, the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Later on Friday, the
Predators defeated the Cole Harbour Sharks ending day one with a
respectable record of 1-0-1. Saturday saw the team face off against
the Cole Harbour Wild. Parrsboro worked hard but found the defence
difficult to penetrate and suffered their first loss of the
tournament by a score of 2-0. With a record of 1-1-1, they earned a
berth in the Sunday morning semi-finals against the tough "league
leading" Cole Harbour Canadians.
The PeeWee Predators arrived on
Sunday ready to play hockey against the Canadians...knowing of the
opponents previous record, each player on the team knew they would
have to work really hard if they were to advance to the championship
game. The Predators came out flying dominating from the first
whistle advancing to the Championship Game with a score of 4-2. Goal
scorers for Parrsboro were Ryan Quinn (2), Dylan Hebb and Kevin
Wood.
Fresh from their win over the "team
to beat" earlier in the morning, the Predators were excited to be in
the finals with a chance to redeem themselves over the Cole Harbour
Wild, the team who they had lost to in preliminary action on
Saturday. The large crowd in attendance for the Championship Game
would not be disappointed with the action on the ice as the two
teams fought hard back and forth to the final whistle of the third
period to end regulation time with a 3-3 tie. Overtime would not be
without plenty of action...in the first overtime period, Parrsboro
forced the play hitting the goal post twice with plenty of shots but
the Wild goalie and defence would have no part of letting the puck
cross their goal line. On the other end of the ice, Parrsboro
goalie, James Shaw, saw plenty of action but Cole Harbour were
unable to beat the net minder. Entering the second overtime period,
play switched to a 3 on 3 format giving more room to skate and
greater opportunity to score. The five games played plus overtime
started to take its toll on the tired group of ten - a great shot
from the high slot with plenty of traffic in front was enough to see
the puck enter the Parrsboro net ending Parrsboro's chance for the
championship banner. Goal scorers for Parrsboro were Patrick Morris,
Todd Mills and Gary Boutilier. Following the game, the Tournament
organizers and team officials from Cole Harbour were "astonished" of
the Parrsboro team's success at the tournament despite only fielding
nine skaters and one goalie. Team, an awesome job and a great
weekend of hockey fun! |
